"Sunrise" comes to Booborowie

After a very early start on Wednesday morning to join Fifi Box and the "Sunrise" weather team in Booborowie, Judy, Will, Hayden, Merridy and Katie stopped in at Gaslight to warm up with a hot drink and some scones. Booborowie (about 23 km's north west of Burra) hosted "Sunrise" as part of it's bid to be crowned Australia's Best Never Heard of Town. Good luck Boob!

August Update - Booborowie has won! Congratulations to all concerned. The town will receive $20,000 to put towards community projects.

New stock

Just arrived at Gaslight is this beautiful Royal Doulton wash bowl. The pattern is Geneva (flow blue) and was produced between 1895 and 1900.

Winter warmers

Now that winter is really with us there is no better way to keep warm than a visit to Gaslight.  A mug of steaming Hot Chocolate and piece of our delicious Pecan and Ginger cake, in front of our pot belly stove, is a sure way to beat the winter chills.

School Holidays

School holidays are always a busy time in Burra, with many families coming to town and enjoying the wonderful heritage sites Burra has to offer. This week we've met lots of visitors who have enjoyed the Burra Heritage Trail. A Passport Key is available from the Visitor’s Centre  and it provides a guide book to an 11 km self guided trail around Burra and a key and to 8 locked sites  - the Monster Mine, the Powder Magazine, the Police Lock up, Redruth Gaol, Hampton Village, Smelts Paddock, the Unicorn Brewery Cellars and the Miner’s Dugouts. The key costs  $20 per adult, $15 concession and $5 for National Trust members and locals. Children are free. Once you have the key you can head off on the trail and let yourself in and out of all the heritage sites around the town. For kids the Monster Mine, Redruth Goal and the Brewery Cellars are a must.

Our newest regulars

We are pleased to introduce our newest regulars -  two week old Tom and Charlie. These gorgeous twin boys have been visiting Gaslight with their mother Meg and big brothers Lachie and Angus and are proving to be a big hit with our other customers.

Something old, something new....

We are happy to introduce a new section to the shop. Our "Something New" selection is a range of new items to compliment our antiques and collectables.  Chosen from the Somerton Green and Ascot ranges, and very much in keeping with our country style, we think the new products will provide some wonderful gift ideas for special occasions - or just for a special treat. 

Classic books

We are always interested in getting good quality books and things that people can add to their collections - and these are wonderful Middle Eastern fables and stories - the translations of the  originals that have yet to be turned into cartoons!

News on SALA

"Cockies V" by Russell Morrison

The South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) is a celebration that promotes the diversity of visual art across South Australia and is on again this year from  7 - 23 August. Visitors to the mid north will have a chance to see some wonderful exhibitions right across the region, with 120 artists exhibiting in over 40 venues.  Gaslight will be hosting "Painting Goyder's Line", a new exhibition by Burra born artist Russell Morrison. You will have the opportunity to meet Russell and hear about his work at a "Meet the Artist"event  on Saturday 16th August.  More information about this as we get closer to the date.

This week many of our customers have been lucky enough to be served by the newest and most engaging member of the Gaslight team.  Ruby - seen here assisting Jill at the counter - has been visiting Burra with her lovely mother. Ruby has been spending time in the shop in between naps and visiting the ducks.  She was particularly pleased to see her old friends Olive and Lois and took time to catch up with all the local news.

This gorgeous Maling bowl (circa 1940) arrived this week - bright and beautiful.

Just arrived at Gaslight, this first edition copy of Thomas Keneally's "Schindler's Ark" ($40).  What an inspirational story.

Jessica and fans at the Tourism Award dinner!

Congratulations to Jessica Dames, winner of the Jim Barry Award for Excellence in the 'Outstanding Contribution by an Individual" category. Jessica's work in bringing the 2008 SALA event to the Clare Valley region was exceptional and we applaud her success. Yaahh for Jessica!!  Keep an eye on our blog for more news about 2009 SALA events in Burra. Gaslight will be hosting an exhibition by the wonderful SA artist Russell Morrison, but there will be much, much more happening around the town.

This is the latest addition to our fabulous cake menu. It's a delicious lemon cheesecake, topped with whipped cream and strawberries. Yum! It goes perfectly with a latte or a hot chocolate ... and with all that fruit on top it's practically health food!

More stock was added to our Cornish ware collection this week.

There's always something interesting to read when you visit Gaslight. With over 2000 books on display we specialise in Australiana, but also have quality books on art and design, gardening, travel and we stock a big selection of biographies and fiction.  

A great place to meet friends or just watch the world go by... 

Shopping for gorgeous things is what Gaslight is all about!

Gaslight was buzzing this weekend with the annual Burra Antique Fair. It was wonderful to see so many people in town. Peter Goers opened the fair and about 1500 passed through the doors over the 2 days.  Mark your diaries for next year - the first weekend in May.
